Abstract
This study aims to re-examine the semantics of sakīnah in the Qur’an and Hadith and to clarify its distinction from “psychological tranquility” in contemporary literature. The central question is whether sakīnah, as used in Qur’anic and hadith contexts, can be regarded as equivalent to a form of psychological tranquility, or whether it possesses distinctive characteristics in terms of its source, function, and telos. The study employs a descriptive-analytical qualitative method based on contextual lexical semantics. It examines collocational and paradigmatic relations in the six Qur’anic occurrences of sakīnah and analyzes its semantic developments in 21 selected hadith reports. At the Qur’anic level, sakīnah is characterized by an explicitly divine source, an inner stabilizing function, its association with situations of fear, pressure, or faith-related decision-making, its connection with the heart, faith, and divine support, and its opposition to ḥamiyyat al-jāhiliyyah. At the hadith level, while the Qur’anic semantic core is preserved, ritual-devotional, dispositional, and, in some cases, collective dimensions become more prominent; nevertheless, these developments remain methodologically secondary to the Qur’anic data. The componential analysis shows that sakīnah cannot be regarded as fully equivalent to common contemporary formulations of psychological tranquility, since its divine source, faith-oriented and guiding telos, and, at times, collective scope distinguish it from conventional psychological accounts. Nevertheless, a limited descriptive overlap between the two domains at the level of human experience is not denied.
