Abstract
“Patience” (Sabr), defined as self-restraint in the face of hardships, is considered one of the most important moral virtues in the Qur'an. This abstract concept can be explained through image schemas derived from human lived experience. The present study seeks to answer how patience is conceptualized based on the “force schema” in verses related to jihad. In this study, using the cognitive semantics approach and the analytical tool of image schemas, the “conceptual domain” of force is examined. Simultaneously, drawing on speech act theory, the “linguistic domain” of force is examined to explain the concept of patience. The findings indicate that “patience” in the verses related to jihad is a moral and empowering act. The presence of the “force schema” in both the semantic and speech act domains demonstrates that the conceptualization of patience in these verses can be explained based on the force model. This means that the pressure resulting from jihad is represented as an external force, while patience, as a moral response to this pressure, functions as a counterforce. Meanwhile, the forces of speech acts in the verses strengthen the counterforce of patience and foster the perseverance of believers. Analysis of the intensity of these forces shows that patience in these verses transcends the level of mere moral recommendation and becomes an active moral counterforce that restrains the pressures of the battlefield. It also organizes the collective behavior of believers through the forces of enablement and attraction inherent in the speech acts. Accordingly, patience is established through divine command and sustained by divine promise and love.
